Whether or not you decide to attempt repair on a DIY basis is up to you - if only a small area of the ceiling is damaged, you might be able to make a patch repair, while larger areas will really benefit from the skills of a plasterer well-versed in traditional plastering methods. While patch repair will be a far cheaper option than total replacement, if more than a third of the ceiling has failed, it is generally advised that replacement will be the most sensible option. In these cases, you will need to decide between repairing old ceilings or replacing them entirely with a modern plasterboard. However, in some instances, these could be a warning sign that the plasterwork has begun to come away from the lath and, if you have taken on a property in a bad state of repair, you might find sections of plasterwork that have already fallen away from the ceiling. In some cases, small cracks or a little unevenness may be nothing to worry about- in fact lath and plaster ceilings are naturally a little uneven. While none of these necessarily point to a huge issue, they may well be signs that a little maintenance or further investigation is required. While they can last hundreds of years, it is not uncommon to find old lath and plaster ceilings requiring a little repair work in renovation projects.Ĭheck your ceiling for sections that look as though they are uneven or sagging and be on the lookout for cracks too. In the end, if you aren’t comfortable performing the install, consider hiring a professional. In addition to enhancing historic interiors, lath and plaster is chunkier and has better soundproofing qualities than modern plasterboard. As a professional home theater installer, I’ve used toggles many times and never had a TV fall off the wall. Mounting a TV on drywall or plaster or even plaster and lath without attaching to a stud can be a very safe and reliable solution IF you know the limits of the wall and the toggles. The quarter-inch Snaptoggle is hands down the best hollow wall anchor on the market, and a few of them can comfortably hold a Samsung 55″ TV on a single sheet of drywall. These can be extremely strong, but as a general rule should not be used with full-motion, or articulating, mounts. Use a wall mounting kit: If there simply aren’t any studs where you want to mount the TV, then you need to use some sort of hollow wall anchor.A good step drill bit will quickly cut through a steel wall mount. The best way to do this is to use a step drill bit and a powerful drill. Make your own holes: What if you found studs, but they don’t line up with the holes on your bracket? Easy: Make extra holes on the wall bracket. Then use a small tool to poke a hole in the wall to see if a stud is actually there. Keep going 16 inches at a time until you are in the area where you want to mount the TV. From there, measure over 16 inches and you should find another stud. By taking off the wall plate, you can stick a thin tool into the gap between the side of the electrical box and the drywall, and then feel which side the stud is on. All outlets are attached to studs, unless they were added after the wall was up (not common). Take off covers: If you can’t locate the studs with a stud finder, locate an outlet on the wall (or any other fixture, like a cold air return). There are a number of solutions that don’t require much, if any, extra work to fix your little problem. But after 20 minutes of scanning for studs, you can’t find any, or the results are inconsistent, or they don’t line up with the holes on your wall mount. You’ve read all of our tips on using a stud finder, and are ready to go. You found the perfect spot to mount a TV in your home.
